CHIEF PROSECUTOR: DANISH POLICE HAS FORWARDED ‘REALLY MANY’ APPEALS TO FOREIGN AUTHORITIES ABOUT SEIZING DEPOSITS OF ALLEGEDLY STOLEN MONEY ON FOREIGN BANK ACCOUNTS

April 1, 2017

Danish police has forwarded ‘really many’ court orders appealing to foreign police authorities about seizing deposits on bank accounts in their respective countries.
This according to an interview with chief counsel for the prosecution Michael Ejlerskov. He is chief of the Tracking Group at Danish Serious Fraud Squad (SØIK).
On these foreign accounts money allegedly stemming from crimes is deposited.
Unfortunately, for those interested in these kind of matters at least, public prosecutor Michael Ejlerskov does not state exactly the precise number of appeals, that Danish Serious Fraud Squad (SØIK) right now has out with foreign police authorities?
Michael Ejlerskov and his unit of police investigators are in charge of the tricky job of collecting the 12,3 billion DKK that criminals have siphoned off Danish tax Skat in an alleged fraud act with the refunding of dividend tax. An alleged crime that happened during the years 2012-2015.
This clawing back of money is no easy task!
According to Michael Ejlerskov it may last up to three months getting access to a bank statement in a country within the European Union (EU), and still worse – almost a year if the request concerns countries outside the EU.
For this reason it is often almost impossible for the police authorities to keep pace with criminal bank transfers.
Why it must take so much time to grant Danish police authorities access to account statements inside and outside the EU is not detailed in the interview.
Maybe bank employees or police officers are able to explain the creation of this precedent?
Why are the swindlers, who are very often also adept it-criminals, granted this huge initial advantage?
After all, crime hurts.
Which factors typically create this intertia in the official international investigative system?
How can they be remdied?
The interview with Michael Ejlerskov was published by DR on March 27. / UD
